Artistic Statement: Threads of Witness

Through the ancient dialogue between warp and weft, my work seeks to capture the emotional essence of the humanitarian crisis. Each tapestry is a testament to the threads that bind us together as humans regardless of borders or politics. The repetitive gestures of weaving – gathering, crossing, binding – mirror our shared human experiences of grief, resilience, and the search for meaning amidst destruction.

The exhibition will feature large-scale tapestries that respond to the emotional weight of witnessing distant suffering. Rather than depicting literal scenes of conflict, my woven surfaces create emotional landscapes – places where sorrow, rage, tenderness and hope coexist through texture, colour, and shadow. Subtle variations in tension and density speak to the fragility of life and the complexity of bearing witness from afar.

As an artist whose practice has long engaged with themes of memory, displacement and trauma, I see this body of work as a continuation of my commitment to weaving a visual language that honours human suffering while reaching for connection across divides. These story cloths stand as both elegy and affirmation – acknowledging devastating loss while insisting on our shared humanity.
